Aboriginal people have established careers in virtually every apprenticeable trade in British Columbia. They are Red Seal carpenters, heavy equipment operators, cooks, electricians, auto body painters, plumbers, ironworkers, machinists, and more. For many years, they have been building and maintaining industries, and with a high demand by industries for skilled tradespeople province-wide today, Aboriginal people are in demand more than ever.
The Industry Training Authority (ITA) with the Governments of Canada and British Columbia through the Canada-BC Labour Market Agreement (LMA) through partnerships with Aboriginal organization, employment and training centres and industry are providing support for Aboriginal people to enter the trades who are:
- Unemployed and cannot qualify for Employment Insurance benefits or programs;
OR
- Underemployed who require skills upgrading.
Aboriginal people who qualify for LMA funded programming, may receive financial support for:
- free tuition
- tools and books
- childcare subsidies, and
- more.
Many of the organizations offering training can also connect you with other opportunities like general skills upgrading, life skills and career counseling, on-the-job training, and introductions to potential employers.
Aboriginal organizations and Industry training organizations and employment / training centres often provide information on trades training and assessment.
