Electricians work in a wide variety of buildings and facilities - on everything from lighting and climate control systems, to communication equipment and thousands of other specific tools and devices. An Electrician is designated as a Construction Electrician under the Inter-provincial Red Seal program.
An Electrician's work involves assembling, installing, commissioning, testing, maintaining, servicing and operating electrical systems and equipment. The three main settings in which electricians typically work are:
- Construction - electricians work either as employees who are part of a contractor's team, on both residential and commercial construction projects, or as independent electrical contractors on such projects.
- Industrial - electricians are typically employed on staff at large-scale industrial facilities such as pulp mills, hydroelectric dams, and mining and smelting operations.
- Institutional - most large institutions such as hospitals, school boards, universities and other public facilities have at least one electrician working as part of their maintenance department.
Electricians also need a good understanding of the many applications of electricity, and must ensure that building codes and other safety requirements are followed.

Information Guide: Preparing to Write an Interprovincial Red Seal Examination
This published information guide provides study techniques which can be used to prepare for writing the Interprovincial Red Seal examination for this trade. Topics which are discussed in the guide are: the National Occupational Analysis (NOA), studying for the Red Seal exam, sample Red Seal questions, and writing the Red Seal exam.
Inter-Provincial Examination Information
All of the Inter-Provincial examinations have an assigned number of questions based on each National Occupational Analysis (NOA) blocks and tasks. Refer to the table for an assigned number of questions per exam, the assigned number of questions per block section and the assigned number of questions per task for this trade.
