Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanics work on industrial and construction vehicles, such as mining trucks and bulldozers; on heavy equipment used in construction, forestry, materials handling, landscaping, and land clearing; as well as on buses and large trucks. Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic is a nationally designated trade under the Inter-provincial Red Seal program.
Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanics overhaul, repair and service equipment such as graders, loaders, shovels, tractors, trucks, forklifts, drills, and wheeled and tracked vehicles. Working from manufacturers' specifications, they identify and repair problems in structural, mechanical, or hydraulic systems.
Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanics are also responsible for safety-testing repaired equipment, and for cleaning and lubricating equipment. Working conditions range from industrial settings - such as plants and mining and logging sites - to airports and repair yards and shops.
Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Enhanced Assessment for Challengers
The Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET) Enhanced Assessment for Challengers approach gives skilled workers a flexible way to obtain their trade credentials. If you wish to challenge the HDET certification, challengers must review the HDET Occupational Performance Standards (OPS) (see link below) and complete the HDET Challenge Package. Challenge applications are assessed for proof of workplace hours and scope of experience in the trade prior to acceptance into the Challenge pathway.
The Challenge pathway for HDET also involves assessing the performance of the HDET challenger by an ITA-registered HDET Assessor. The challenger receives certification only after demonstrating sufficient evidence of their competency in the trade as expressed in the occupational performance standards set by the industry.
To become certified as a HDET, challengers must:
- Complete a self-assessment (submitted with the Challenge Application)
- Submit a Portfolio of Evidence, which includes evidence of previous training and/or work experience, with the Challenge Application. (The Portfolio is reviewed by an ITA-registered HDET Assessor.)
- Complete a written knowledge assessment
- Complete a competency conversation (technical interview)
- Complete a practical assessment
The ITA-registered assessors are Red Seal-certified Heavy Duty Equipment Technicians with a minimum of 10 years experience who have received formal training in the enhanced assessment process. On completion of the assessment process, the challenger receives a detailed transcript from ITA indicating whether or not the standards for the credential were achieved. If the assessor identified gaps in the challenger's knowledge or skills the challenger must upgrade their skills or knowledge in the identified areas and provide new evidence that the gaps have been addressed. The challenger will then be reassessed only on the identified areas.
If you wish to challenge, review the supporting documentation for challengers:
1. HDET Occupational Performance Standards (OPS)
2. HDET Challenger Information Kit - provides information on the assessment process
