Training on the Job: Are You Eligible to Train an Apprentice?
An apprentice is supervised by an experienced tradesperson. In most cases, this person is certified in that trade. If they are not, they can apply for Supervision and Sign Off Authority from ITA.
Who is eligible for Supervision and Sign Off Authority?
If you’re a tradesperson who has not been certified, but you have extensive experience in your trade, you may be eligible for Supervision and Sign Off Authority. We recommend you apply when you first register your apprentice.
How to apply
You do not have to write an exam, but you do need to document your work experience in your trade. If you are approved, you’ll be authorized to supervise apprentice training on the job. However, it does not mean that you are certified in your trade.
To be certified in your trade, you must write and pass the Interprovincial or Certificate of Qualification exam within 12 months of being approved for Supervision and Sign Off Authority.
