Mary-Anne Bowcott - Plumbing
As a business owner, journeyman Plumber, class B Gasfitter, and certified steep slope Roofer, Mary-Anne is living proof that hard work pays off. Entering the trades was not an easy process for her, as she faced numerous challenges along the way including schooling troubles and naysayers who weren’t confident that a woman would be able to succeed in the industry. Today, women comprise 10% of trades apprentices in BC, and their numbers continue to grow.
Mary-Anne proactively contributes to this change through her company, Westcom Plumbing, and has taken on numerous female apprentices over the years. In addition to her perseverance and dedication, as she received encouragement along the way from co-workers, particularly those who mentored her as an apprentice. Ultimately, she believes that the key to entering trades, particularly for someone who represents a minority within the industry, is to always have confidence in your abilities and understand that there are many people who are willing to offer support and guidance. She believes that trades can offer an illustrious career for people of all backgrounds, and continues to promote innovation and progress amongst her mentees.
