Meet Your Advisor: Julie Sawatsky

Julie Sawatsky is one of our new advisors and tells apprentices to be their own advocate, learn all they can in school and on the job, and find a mentor.

Apprenticeship Advisors provide regional support to apprentices and employer sponsors. They help build knowledge and awareness of the B.C. apprenticeship system and provide guidance to apprentices and sponsors on processes and policies related to the apprenticeship journey and challenger pathway.

Here's a Q&A with Julie Sawatsky, Apprenticeship Advisor for Vancouver and Richmond.

What is your trades background/experience?

I’m a Red Seal carpenter. I’ve worked mostly in residential renovations, but also in cabinet shops and with the union. I’ve taught carpentry and joinery at BCIT, Tradeworks, and the Roundhouse as well as facilitated programs for women in trades and youth. I’m involved in many tradeswomen groups as a mentor.

How long have you been with ITA?

I just started at ITA in September.

What do you enjoy most about working at ITA?

I enjoy meeting the apprentices and look forward to sharing knowledge to help improve peoples’ lives through rewarding careers in the skilled trades.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I like riding my bike and gardening.

What would you like people to know about the trades?

It’s fun, you get to make things, and you can see what you created at the end of the day!

What advice would you give to people interested in becoming an apprentice?

Be your own advocate, learn all you can in school and on the job, and find a mentor!
