Q&A with Heavy Duty Mechanic Sweg Minhas
Sweg Minhas is a Level 1 Heavy Duty Mechanic from Chilliwack, B.C. Growing up around big machinery, Sweg has always been interested in how things work. He merges his critical thinking with hands-on applications in all facets of life. When he’s not working on vehicles, you can find Sweg pursuing Jiu Jitsu and boxing in his free time. For Sweg, a combination of using his head and his hands is what makes a career in the trades the right fit.
Q: Where are you from?
I am from Chilliwack, British Columbia.
Q: What trade and level are you currently in?
I am doing heavy duty mechanics level 1 and going for level 2 in January 2020.
Q: Describe what you enjoy most about the trades.
The thing I love most about the trades is that I can apply skilled trades to my life outside of work, as the versatility of mechanical principles allows me to work on my own vehicles at home.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in the trades?
I have always had an interest in heavy equipment, and since my dad works for the railway, I have always been exposed to big machinery.
Q: What do you love doing in your spare time?
I am a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter and a boxer in my free time.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now?
In 10 years, I see myself holding a Red Seal certification in Commercial Transport, as well as getting into commercial vehicle inspecting—maybe even opening my own shop.
