Industrial Mechanics, or Millwrights, install, repair, overhaul and maintain machinery and heavy mechanical equipment, such as conveyor systems, in diverse settings including repair shops, plants, construction sites, mines, logging operations, ski hills and most production and manufacturing facilities. Millwrights also perform routine maintenance activities, such as cleaning and lubricating equipment, adjusting valves and seals, and investigating breakdowns.

Heavy Duty Equipment Technicians maintain, manufacture, overhaul, recondition and repair equipment powered by internal combustion engines or electricity. This can include graders, loaders, shovels, off-highway tractors, off-highway trucks, forklifts, wheeled and tracked vehicles of all types used in construction, logging, sawmill, manufacturing, mining and other similar industry.

Machinists turn blocks of metal into complex, intricate parts for other products. They fit and assemble metal parts and sub-assemblies, ensuring the parts in these products meet exacting standards in size, strength and hardness. They also set up and operate all machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, saws, grinding machines, drilling and boring machines, shapers, planers, precision measuring tools, hand and power tools, and the related attachments and accessories including C.N.C. machining, selection, use and maintenance of cutting tools.

Metal Fabricators build, assemble and repair products made of steel or other metals for use in a wide variety of manufacturing and construction industries. Their work is often intricate and highly precise, and they must be familiar with the properties of metal and know how to operate specialized metalworking machines. They can work for sheet metal fabrication and welding shops and for manufacturers of structural steel, boilers, heavy machinery and transportation equipment. They can also work for shipbuilding companies and for welding, ironwork and sheet metal work contractors. Metal fabrication is a good foundational skill to have in many rapidly evolving industries, such as aviation. 

“Aircraft Structural Technician” means a person who selects, measures, shears, cuts, bends, forms, heat treats, seals, fabricates, fits, inspects, paints and refinishes parts and components to drawing specifications; drills, countersinks, dimples, reams and taps holes for bolting, screws, riveting, and installation of special fasteners; assembles parts and components and sub-assemblies using special jigs and fixtures; uses special tools and tooling for installation of bolts, rivets, screws and special fasteners; installs completed components in aircraft and inspects and verifies the installation and operation of the components using test and measuring equipment as required; reworks and/or replaces components to rectify damaged or malfunctioning components.

Occupational Description

Aircraft Maintenance Technicians perform a broad range of tasks. They inspect and troubleshoot aircraft, including airframe structures, engines and systems. They disassemble and remove defective parts, while also assembling and installing replacements. They also interpret technical manuals, drawings and blueprints, test aircraft systems, record problems and action taken to rectify them, and maintain an accurate statement of maintenance history.
