Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics install, maintain and service residential, commercial, industrial and institutional heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration units and systems. They connect to air delivery systems, install and service hydronic and secondary refrigerant systems and associated controls. Their duties include laying out reference points for installation, assembling and installing components, installing wiring to connect components to an electric power supply, and calibrating related controls.  

They measure, cut, bend, thread and connect pipe to functional components and utilities. They also maintain and service systems by inspecting and testing components, brazing and soldering parts to repair defective joints, adjusting and replacing worn or defective components and reassembling repaired components and systems. As part of service and commissioning, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics start-up, test, charge, adjust, calibrate, balance, measure, verify, maintain and document systems.

Metal Fabricators build, assemble and repair products made of steel or other metals for use in a wide variety of manufacturing and construction industries. Their work is often intricate and highly precise, and they must be familiar with the properties of metal and know how to operate specialized metalworking machines. They can work for sheet metal fabrication and welding shops and for manufacturers of structural steel, boilers, heavy machinery and transportation equipment. They can also work for shipbuilding companies and for welding, ironwork and sheet metal work contractors. Metal fabrication is a good foundational skill to have in many rapidly evolving industries, such as aviation.

Sheet Metal Workers lay out, fabricate, assemble, weld, install, and service the following: ducting, spouting, fittings, cabinets, gutters, copings, flashings, supporting devices, wall systems, building envelopes, ornamental work and integral equipment associated with the blowpipe, air pollution, heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, metal roofing, restaurant, kitchen, marine installations and hospital equipment fields.
