Occupational Description

A "Parts Technician 1" is involved in ordering, warehousing, maintaining inventory control and sales of parts. They are responsible for identifying parts and equipment, searching for parts, shipping and receiving parts, providing customer service and advice, and maintaining records. 

A Parts Technician works in various industries such as automotive service, commercial transport, heavy duty equipment, small engine repair, aeronautics, agricultural equipment, marine equipment, the mining sector, and the forestry sector. The work environment for Parts Technicians is generally indoors in a warehouse and/or at a service counter. Some parts people may perform deliveries of parts to their customers. Parts Technicians generally work in teams that include retail service staff, sales staff, and service technicians.

Every day, you’ll inspect, diagnose, repair and maintain engines, transmissions and other systems. Your work will take place mostly on a busy shop floor with other Technicians, as you use your expert knowledge to manage a broad range of tasks.

You can work for a vehicle manufacturing company, a dealer, or anywhere else vehicles are serviced. Every vehicle is different and it’s up to you to isolate the problem, find a solution and send drivers safely on their way.

Occupational Description

Automotive Refinishing Technicians work on the surfaces of motor vehicles, primarily in restoring vehicle finishes once body work has been completed. They remove layers of old coatings, match colours and mix paints, prepare surfaces for painting, apply primers, sealers, base coats, single-stage and clear coats, clean and polish painted surfaces, and apply protective coatings. 

Many Automotive Refinishing Technicians work in close contact with Auto Body and Collision Technicians. Automotive refinishing duties may overlap between the two, particularly in small shops. In larger places of employment, Automotive Refinishing Technicians likely work as specialists, after body repairs have been completed. They may also work with estimators, partspersons, detailers, preppers, glass installers and production managers.

Occupational Description

Auto Body and Collision Technicians repair and restore damaged motor vehicles. They assess body damage and develop repair estimates and repair plans. Their repair work may include repairing scratches, minor damage, dents and extensive structural damage. They replace vehicle components that are damaged beyond repair, and they align and replace suspension and steering components. They may restore interior components of vehicles and work with mechanical and electronic components such as air conditioning systems, exhaust systems, drivetrains, engine cooling systems, advanced electronic components and passenger restraint systems.
